Blurb was founded in 2005 by Eileen Gittins and has spent two decades focused on photo books, portfolios, and other visually driven formats where layout and image reproduction matter more than they do in a standard text novel. Its book-creation tools, both desktop software and web-based, are built around laying out full-bleed photo spreads and custom page designs, which is a meaningfully different workflow than uploading a plain manuscript file the way most text-book platforms expect.
Print quality on photo paper and image reproduction tends to draw the most consistent praise, and formats extend to magazines and trade books alongside the core photo-book catalog. Authors can sell through Blurb's own storefront or push distribution to Amazon and other retailers for a wider reach. It costs more per copy than a plain paperback platform, which is the tradeoff for the layout tools and paper quality, and it fits a photographer, illustrator, or wedding or event shooter putting together a portfolio book far better than someone self-publishing a novel.
