A Berlin book printer and bindery

Berliner Buchdruck (berliner-buchdruck.de) is a digital book printing and binding shop in Berlin-Charlottenburg, run by A8 Druck- und Medienservice from Bismarckstraße 8 near Ernst-Reuter-Platz. It prints and binds books from a single copy up to larger runs, in formats up to DIN A3, and runs a books-on-demand service for self-publishing authors, agencies, publishers and companies. The site calls itself a Berlin book printer serving Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and a shipping banner on the homepage says it ships EU-wide and to Switzerland.

The books-on-demand page opens with the core promise: a book can be printed "ab einem einzigen Exemplar" (from a single copy), "komplett ohne Mindestauflage, Lagerkosten oder finanzielles Risiko" (entirely without a minimum run, storage costs or financial risk).

What a seller actually gets

The service is built around personal handling rather than a self-service portal. The page states: "Books on Demand ist für uns kein fertiges Produkt, sondern ein gestaltbarer Prozess" (for us, books on demand is not a finished product but a process that can be shaped). Every project includes a fixed contact person, advice on format, binding and paper, a cost breakdown per copy, careful production, and project management "ohne standardisierte Plattform" (without a standardized platform).

The ordering process runs in seven steps: first contact by form, phone or email; an optional rough calculation in the online price calculator; an individual quote for special requirements or single copies; a check of the print files and, on request, a sample copy for approval; production release; printing and finishing; and delivery or pickup at the Berlin shop. The company recommends an individual quote for single copies, and for regular reprints it offers a volume-based quote that it says is cheaper than the single price in the online calculator.

For sellers, the most relevant options are the add-on services. The page lists "Versandlösungen inklusive neutralem Whitelabel" (shipping solutions including neutral white label), described as a complete shipping service to end customers or third parties "ohne Markenerkennung" (without brand recognition). It also offers single-copy shipping and storage on call for recurring needs, layout design, product photos for web shops and social media, and websites and landing pages through its partner a8-webdesign.de. Books can be reprinted "Auch Jahre später jederzeit" (at any time, even years later).

The page names the typical uses: novels, biographies and specialist books for self-publishers; advance editions, test prints and special projects for publishers; client gifts, presentation books and layout samples for agencies; training material, anniversary editions and documentation for companies; photo books, art books and catalogs for creative projects; teaching material for schools; and product catalogs and merchandising brochures for e-commerce companies.

Formats, bindings and finishes

Books can be printed in black and white or color, in formats from DIN A5 to DIN A3 in portrait or landscape, on glossy, matte or volume paper from 90 to 200 g/m². The homepage says a spine can be up to 6.0 cm thick, enough for a book of more than 1,000 pages. The binding range includes:

  • Hardcover Premium, with a paper or cloth cover, up to A3, embossing optional
  • Hardcover PremiumPlus with thread binding, up to 700 pages (350 sheets at 80 g/m²)
  • Softcover Premium with a 300 g/m² cover, and Softcover PremiumPlus with thread binding
  • Open thread binding as hardcover or softcover, with a choice of thread color
  • Hardcover with book screws and exchangeable pages, up to 900 pages (400 sheets at 80 g/m²)
  • Spiral-bound ring books in softcover or hardcover, as Wire-O in silver, black or white, up to 530 pages, with a thumb hole option for calendars
  • Thread knot stitching, Swiss brochure, saddle stitching and flip books

The product menu also lists book scanning, paperback binding, printing a PDF as a book, and a WhatsApp chat book. Beyond books, a sister site, berliner-druckservice.de, handles other digital print such as premium business cards, large folded flyers, brochures and magazines, stickers and labels, and personalized calendars and planners, which a self-publisher can add to a book launch.

Finishes include headbands, ribbon markers, book corners, hot foil embossing in gold, silver or blind, dust jackets, laser cutting and laser engraving, film lamination on screw-bound hardcovers, and handmade book cases and slipcases to measure. Cover materials include Efalin, Buckram and imitation leather. A sample copy can be ordered to check material, color and feel before a series is produced.

Prices and speed

There is no fixed price list. The online price calculator gives orientation for formats up to DIN A3, and the page lists what moves the price: page count and color, format, finishes such as ribbons, hot foil and dust jackets, paper quality and weight, the number of copies, and delivery date, since tight deadlines or express production can add surcharges. The company notes that its calculator is built for one-off productions, so a single copy "vergleichsweise hoch wirken" (can look comparatively expensive), and that books on demand becomes more economical when copies are produced repeatedly as needed.

Speed is a strength. Express book printing is "fertig am nächsten Arbeitstag (max. 10 Exemplare)" (ready the next working day, up to 10 copies), and super express is "fertig am gleichen Arbeitstag (max. 6 Exemplare)" (ready the same working day, up to 6 copies).

Support

The service hotline is (030) 45 80 41 20, open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:30, with email, a contact form and a price request form. The site offers German and English, carries Trusted Shops, and links a partner for proofreading and editing. Its print tips cover typesetting, preparing print files and bleed, PDF setup and choosing paper.

Who it suits

Berliner Buchdruck fits authors, small publishers, agencies and companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland who want books printed in small numbers with real choice over binding and finish, and who value a named contact. The white-label shipping and storage-on-call options let a self-publisher or small shop sell books without holding stock or shipping them personally, and the same-day express covers urgent single copies.

It is a hands-on print partner rather than a platform. Orders start with a conversation or a quote, and the site names no connection to online shops or marketplaces, so a seller would pass orders to the company directly.
