Werk aan de Muur is a Dutch online marketplace for wall art, where photographers, painters, illustrators and digital artists sell their work as made-to-order prints, and the company produces and delivers each piece once a customer orders it. The name means "work on the wall." Its homepage says it has filled more than 375,000 walls and works with more than 26,000 "beeldmakers" (image makers), and it describes its range as art from European image makers "in het perfecte formaat en materiaal" (in the perfect size and material). For an artist, it is a way to sell wall art in the Netherlands and neighboring countries without printing, framing or shipping anything.
How the marketplace works
The site sells to consumers, and the artist supplies the image. Registration splits into two roles, "Particulier" (private customer) and "Beeldmaker" (image maker), and the Beeldmakers menu carries a "Word beeldmaker" link for artists who want to join. Every piece on the site is credited to its maker, and each product tile ends with "Kies zelf de maat & materiaal" (choose your own size and material): the customer picks the artwork first and the format second, and the company produces it. The homepage sums up the model in four short promises: "Continu groeiende collectie" (a constantly growing collection), "Hoogwaardige materialen" (high-quality materials), "Bijna elke maat is mogelijk" (almost any size is possible) and "Gemaakt op bestelling" (made to order).
Makers are presented as the point of the shop. The site has a "Kunst van echte makers" (art by real makers) section, maker interviews, a "Beeldmakers in de spotlight" feature on makers "van straatkunstenaar tot wereldreiziger" (from street artist to world traveler), and two maker lists in the menu, "Populair" and "Exclusief". The popular list includes photographers John Kreukniet, Adelheid Smitt, Henk Meijer Fotografie and Karin Bakker Fotografie, painter Janet Edens and digital artist Arty Guava; the exclusive list includes photographer Sander Poppe, Atelier Paint-Ing, Carla Van Iersel, Bianca ter Riet, Jacky and Studio Allee. Next to living artists the shop also sells "Oude Meesters" (Old Masters), with works by Vincent van Gogh, Gustav Klimt, Edward Hopper and Anton Mauve among the popular pieces.
The site is open about AI. Its filters let a buyer choose between "Geen AI gebruikt" (no AI used) and "Deels AI gebruikt" (partly AI used), and works made with AI carry a label such as "Gemaakt door Sigrid Vondran met ondersteuning van AI" (made by Sigrid Vondran with the support of AI). An artist who uses AI tools can sell here, but the work is marked as such.
Materials and formats
The materials list is the product catalog: ArtFrame™, Acrylglas (acrylic glass), Aluminium, Behang (wallpaper), Canvas, Canvas voor buiten (outdoor canvas), Fotoprint (photo print), HD Metal and Naadloos behang (wallpaper without visible joins). The site has a "Materialenkiezer" (material chooser) and a page to compare materials.
ArtFrame™ is the company's own format and the one it pushes hardest. The site calls it a "Modern alternatief voor canvas" (modern alternative to canvas), and its tagline is "Eén frame, eindeloos veel kunst" (one frame, endless art). A new wooden version is described as "Dezelfde slimme wissellijst, nu in warm naturel hout" (the same smart interchangeable frame, now in warm natural wood), and its product block reads "Warm en tijdloos, De lijst voor een warm interieur" (warm and timeless, the frame for a warm interior). The menu has a separate page for ArtFrame sizes. Canvas comes in a choice of 2 or 4.5 cm depth.
Customers can also order their own image through "Eigen foto" (own photo), alongside the artists' catalog.
Prices
Customer prices are shown on the tiles. On the site's printing-on-demand collection page, ArtFrame™ pieces at 70×50 cm, 50×70 cm and 60×60 cm show 131,- marked down 10% to 118,-, during a sitewide promotion headed "Nu met 10% korting" (now with 10% off) that excludes gift cards. Listings can be filtered by a price indication from S (small) to XL (extra large). What an artist earns from a sale is not on these pages.
Browsing and discovery
The shop is organized for people decorating a room, which is how an artist's work gets found. Works are grouped by art style (Schilderijen, Fotografie, Digitale Kunst, Illustraties, Tekeningen, Collage), by color (terracotta, olive green, taupe, beige, bronze, orange and more), by theme (people, flowers, nature and weather, animals, seasons, countries and travel), by interior style (Klassiek, Vintage, Industrieel, Landelijk, Basic, Design) and by room. Seasonal and trend collections sit on top: Herfst (autumn), Klaprozen (poppies), Amandelbloesem (almond blossom), and "Tangerine Twist", billed as "Dé kleur van 2026" (the color of 2026). The site says it holds "De grootste collectie van Nederland" (the largest collection in the Netherlands).
Buyers also get tools that send them to specific works: an ArtFinder, a search-by-image option, a "Gezien op TV" (seen on TV) section, works marked "Gezien bij vtwonen", a Werk aan de Muur app, tips on choosing the right size and on acoustics, and made-to-measure interior advice. Filters cover orientation (portrait, landscape, square, panorama), mood and medium.
Delivery and service
Shipping within the Netherlands is free ("Gratis verzending"). The shipping selector lists a range of European countries, among them Belgium, Germany, France and Poland, with a note to get in touch if a country is missing. The shop runs in Dutch, German, French and English, and outside the Netherlands several versions trade under the name Art Heroes. The FAQ covers ordering, payment, delivery time, mounting and hanging, and gift cards.
Customer service answers by phone and email between 9:00 and 15:00, and by chat around the clock ("Via de chat zijn wij 24/7 bereikbaar"). The header shows 5,044 reviews with an average of 4.8 out of 5. Beyond consumers, the site has a business section ("Zakelijk"), a partner program for stylists and an ambassador program.
Who it suits
Werk aan de Muur suits photographers, painters, illustrators and digital artists who want their work sold as quality wall decor to Dutch-speaking and nearby European buyers, with production, framing, delivery and customer service handled by the company. The catalog is built around room styles and trend colors, so landscape, botanical, abstract and interior-friendly photography fits naturally, and the ArtFrame format gives a maker a distinctive product.
It is narrower than a general print-on-demand service: the range is wall art and wallpaper only, the company sells under its own brand, and the maker terms sit behind registration. For an artist who wants a busy Dutch wall-art shop rather than a fulfillment service for their own store, it is a strong fit.
