Merch by Amazon launched in September 2015 as Amazon's answer to the marketplace-style print-on-demand model, and it's since been renamed Amazon Merch on Demand. The appeal is obvious: your t-shirt, hoodie, or phone case design gets listed as an actual Amazon product page, complete with Prime-eligible shipping in many cases, tapping into a customer base that dwarfs any standalone POD marketplace. Amazon handles the entire production and fulfillment chain, so there's genuinely nothing to manage beyond uploading a design, writing a decent title and bullet points, and picking colors and sizes.
The tradeoff is Amazon's tier system, new accounts start with a small number of design slots, and moving up to list more designs depends on sales performance that Amazon evaluates on its own schedule and criteria, which it doesn't fully disclose. That makes it a slower, more opaque ramp-up than most marketplaces, where you can list a hundred designs on day one. It rewards patience and consistent, well-tagged listings more than a burst of uploads, and it's worth the wait for a seller who wants access to Amazon's search traffic specifically rather than a POD-focused audience.
